Pastor Mary A. McBride-Lee is a lifelong educator, civil rights foot soldier, and dedicated servant leader whose journey spans from the historic marches of Selma, Alabama, to the heart of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Born in Oakhill, Alabama, and the youngest of thirteen children, she walked across the Edmund Pettus Bridge alongside icons such as John Lewis, Hosea Williams, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. An experience that shaped her unwavering commitment to justice and community.
With more than 35 years in the Bridgeport Public School system and over 12 years as the Councilwoman for the 135th District, Pastor McBride-Lee has devoted her life to lifting others through faith, education, and service. She is the founding pastor of El-Shaddai Pentecostal Church, a mentor to generations, and the recipient of President Barack Obama’s Civil Rights Foot Soldier Award, presented by Senator Richard Blumenthal.
As an author, she shares her powerful story through her books At the Foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Bloody Sunday and the children’s book adaptation The Mary A. McBride-Lee Story. Her life remains a testament to courage, compassion, and walking boldly in one’s God-given purpose.
